Our initial devliverables were conditionally approved, which is good news.
We have a lot of work to do before final design is due in December, but we have a team in place with more than 75 registered members and the new ENG 491 class starting up.
We're still working on several donors. We got word from Texas Instruments that they will be donating $7500 and in-kind technical support.

Friends, the team has responded to its first set of deliverables required for the competition. These deliverables included design development drawings that reveal the general direction we're taking with the house. We will update this site in the next few months to make the look and feel consistent with the brand and vision that we are trying to establish.

Greetings, this is the opening post to the SD09 UIUC team blog.
If you are currently a member of the UIUC staff, faculty, or student body and would like to be on the team in any capacity, be sure to register from the main home page and choose "participating."
If you are external to the university, please register under "receive updates" and we will add your e-mail address to our update list. This choice would be best if, for example, you are a sponsor, alum, or other well-wisher.
Please use the Wiki (wiki.ece.uiuc.edu) for storing documents and other correspondence as necessary for the competition. Please use this blog for any other communication.
As for news, please see the announcement (http://www.energy.gov/news/5888.htm) of our acceptance to the 09 competition. I am Prof. Chapman (or simply, "Pat"), and I am one of several faculty advisors for the Illinois team. I am also the principal investigator on the $100k DOE grant that partially supports our team. Other faculty advisors are also rejoining the team, and I hope they will post their own welcome messages soon.
The team is pleased to announce that Katrin Klingenberg has agreed to be the project manager for the Illinois team. Katrin is joining the university as an adjunct faculty member, and has substantial experience in passive home design and is leading the PassivHaus Institute, US. We are also pleased to announce that we have a number of returning students from the 07 team, as well as many new students already participating. Initial architectural design meeting have been taking place over the last few weeks. Teams for other specialties are now being formed - please register if you are interested for any or all specialties.
The specialty teams are as follows:
Architecture and Design (building design, aesthetics, overall direction)
Industrial Design (interior design, aesthetics, other industrial design tasks)
Communications and Education (website design, house tour, educational outreach, and other communication activities)
Business and Marketing (economic analysis of the house cost, marketing presentation, etc.)
Comfort Conditing and Appliances (HVAC, appliances, engineering of related household systems)
Power, Control, and Home Entertainment (PV power, monitoring and control syste, home entertainment system, and related tasks)
Construction and Moving (physical building of the house, construction management, and logistics of moving the house to/from DC).
Over the next months we will be getting better organized and publicizing various ways students can participate. Please help us spread the word!
